We just returned from a sad journey to the vet -- Tabs went to the Rainbow Bridge tonight. She had been doing well with the tumor therapy but developed another serious problem that sometimes occurs when there has been pleural effusion. The lining of her lungs had become inflamed and stiffened up, causing her not to be able to expand her lungs to breathe. This is a very serious condition with a very poor prognosis. Her breathing became very labored today and we couldn't risk her getting critical during the night, so we made the very difficult decision to help her cross the Bridge now. We are heart broken, but she is now free of struggling. Thank you again to the CB for caring ...'Kaika's (and Tabbygail's) mom

UPDATE 10/1/2009:

A big thank you to CBers who have been purring for Tabbygail. Her vet visit this afternoon went well. She didn't have as much fluid in her lungs as she did in previous weeks, and the vet seems to think that maybe she is responding to the alternative treatment. She has seemed more herself this the past couple of days, even playing with a fur mousie! Thank you so much, everyone who is purring for our girl! Love, 'Kaika and his mom

My mom and I would really appreciate any blogosphere purrs for my big sister Tabbygail. Jeter put the word out in his diary and Catsters have been very kind.

Tabbygail has been diagnosed with a tumor, which the vet said is in a place that would make surgery very risky. So even if our humans could afford to send her to UC Davis for the surgery, she may not survive it. My mom, our vet and our acupuncturist/TCM practitioner worked out a treatment plan together: chest taps to relieve the fluid build-up and an alternative medicine formula of medicinal mushroom extracts which has been successful in shrinking tumors in studies done in Japan and other countries.

When my mom took Tabbygail to the vet about four weeks ago, the vet didn't think she would live through the weekend, but after the first chest tap, she felt better. She has had two more chest taps since then and has been on the medicine for 1 week. She seem to be having a good day so far. Tabby also is hyperthyroid, and is on meds for that, too.
So that's what is going on with our Tabbygail. She is such a sweet little brown tabby girl and she can use some healing energy, purrs and prayers. Since we don't have a blog, CBers can send their purrs to Tabbygail's Catster page or just send them out to the Universe ... Tabby will get them either way! Thanks so much, KC. The vet did an aspiration of the lump and the cells do not appear to be cancer so we'll wait a month. If the lump is not gone then, Sanuk will have to again go into surgery. At 16 and a 1/2 and having undergone two major surgeries in the last 6 months, I shudder to even think about her having to go through that again. But she seems to feel good - eats well, talks all the time, and she's gained a little weight since the surgery in the spring. Thank you so much for keeping Sanuk in your prayers. ~~ email received 8/19/2009

Sanuk, my 16 year old kitty cat has been through so much this past year (stomatosis, an immune system disorder that causes ulcerated gums and required the removal of all but her canine teeth), a raging infection which, thank goodness antibiotics finally cured. When she went in for a check up on monday, they found a small mass in her lower abdominal/breast area. The earliest they could schedule her for surgery was 7/1 (no other vet in this area could even see her until the first week of july). I just got a call from her vet that they've had a cancellation and can do the surgery this friday (6/19). Please pray for sanuk and her vet/surgeon. Thank you so much. Everyone's comments have been so kind and all the hugs and purrs have made us (well, at least me) feel a little better.

However, Jade is much sicker than I originally thought. Instead of the chronic UTI, Jade has a life-threatening case of infectious feline anemia. If I had not been so blessed to find a vet that knew what her symptoms were, I would have already lost her. He reacted quickly and put her on a strict regimen of medications, but she is still very ill and is not yet out of the woods.

KC, would you please add an update to ask everyone to keep praying for Jade and to tell everyone that has sent purrs, hugs, and prayers our way how much we appreciate all of them? It really helps me to know that other people care--I don't feel quite so alone. So many people don't understand how I could be so attached to Jade; they say she's just a cat. But I know the people who read your blog understand that she's so much more to me, just as their furbabies are so much more to them.

And most of all, thank you KC, for putting us in touch with all this love and support when we need it the most.

Love and Many Purrs,

Sondra

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I's received this email an wanted a place fur effurryone to leaf comments, since they do not haf a bloggie. She suffers from chronic urinary tract problems and she is very ill. I'm terrified that I'm going to lose her.
Jade was with during a recent abusive relationship and if it wasn't for her, I think I might have simply given up. As Ninja doesn't have a blog of her own, KC created a post here where people could leave comments and we could post updates.
Here's the first email: I am very worried about her as her breathing has become somewhat noisy in the past few days. She seems alright otherwise, but I am worried that this may be the start of the cancer growing in her lungs. Please pray for her and me too as my heart is just breaking!! Thank you all so much!
And the second email: I have been in touch with her VET and she wants me to monitor it till after the weekend (its a long weekend here). Someone else suggested that possibly she has a hairball that is high up in the stomach. She has never had a real problem with hairballs, but you never know. As Ninja has to be anesthetised to be examined, the Vet is not too anxious to do this. I am terrified that when the time comes for her to be examined that they will tell me that her lungs are full of cancer and that it is time for her to go. I am so scared of that scenario. She is feeling fine otherwise, but if anything changes, I will take her in right away, even if I have to take her to the Emergency Vet. I won't let her suffer. She is my love and my heart. Thank you so much for caring. ~Brenda & Ninja
Update Email 10/15: Things have not changed too much with Ninja except that she started to refuse food and started licking her lips. I thought she was nauseated for some reason and got a medication from the Vet that is supposed to help her stomach. She had her first dose and ate 1/3 of a can of Fancy Feast which is more than she ate all day yesterday. We are still unsure of the outcome of this as the Vet does not really want to sedate her to examine her. I am still monitoring her. She does not seem to be in any pain and is not depressed. Please keep purring for her. Thank you for your support. ~Brenda & Ninja
Ninja Update 10/17: I am not convinced that it is actually her tummy that is upset. I think now that she has some nasal congestion and has been having a hard time smelling her food. I got her some fish flavored Fancy Feast and she ate 2 cans yesterday!! I was so pleased. She seems a bit brighter and her chest wheezing has settled down. I still think she has an upper respiratory issue going on, but she is not short of breath as she was a few days ago. She actually ran after the laser pointer at top speed last night for a few minutes. She slept well and gave me a love bite just before I left for work this morning. I think all the purring and positive thoughts have helped us so much in this difficult time. I can’t say she is out of the woods (because of the unknown cancer condition), but she is certainly enjoying life again. She isn’t perfect, but she is quite a bit better. Please keep her in your thoughts for continued improvement. Thank you to each and everyone one of you!! ~Brenda & Ninja
Ninja Update 10/22 - I have appointment with the VET tomorrow at 4:00 CST. We plan to do an xray to see why she is vomiting after eating and having a noisy purr. She was not interested in eating this morning (Wednesday) and I gave her a PepcidAC to calm her tummy. She slept well with me all night and I held her close. I am hoping for the best - that she has something that can be treated, but I am preparing for the worst - cancer. If the problem is cancer, I feel I must let her go. It pains me so much, I can't describe it. She is my companion, my confidante and my heart, always there, always non-judgemental. She has slept in my bed every night that I have slept at home for over 12 years, even now, when she is not feeling too well. Please pray hard for my little girl. If its cancer, I can't let her whither away before she goes to the bridge just because I want her here with me. I will have to make the hardest decision I have ever had to make tomorrow, so please pray for me to have the strength to do what is the best for Ninja despite my desire not to let her go. I am working today, but I will spend the day at home with Ninja tomorrow. Schwartz: Tuesdays With Morrie
Just when I think that I can't cry any more, an entire new flood of tears come. I am swallowed by a grief so deep, that I feel my heart is caving in. Last night our beloved Roscoe went over the rainbow bridge. He took a sudden turn for the worse late last night. At 4am we rushed him to the closest 24 hour clinic located near Bologna. The vet worked with Roscoe for hours, doing everything in his power to save our sweet baby. Roscoe's system seemed to be shutting down. Three times he quit breathing on his own and three times he wasintubated and assisted with his breathing. Three times he came back to us. The vet pushed onward telling us that Roscoe's heart was very strong that he was putting a good fight. He was convinced that if we could just get Roscoe stabilized, that there would be hope for treatment.
The fourth time sweet Roscoe stopped breathing, I wanted to scream "STOP IT!" as the vet intubated him for the fourth time. I didn't want to be the one to give up, but I didn't want Roscoe to go through anymore. Somehow that sweet little cat saved me having to do it. Before I could utter the words his little heart gave up and death came to carry him gently over the bridge.
I am devastated. Please don't one more person tell me that "it's only a cat". For those of you who can say that, I pity you for you have never really experience the unconditional love and friendship of an animal.
We loving placed Roscoe in a beautiful wicker basket. He was wrapped in his favorite blanket and surround by photos of his family. We also placed in a few of his favorite toys, including a catnip sack his Grandma had given him and a red mouse from his friendAsta; red was Roscoe's color. We secured the basket and placed a photo of Rosoce on the top, along with his name and a poem. He sleeps now under the beautiful plum tree in yard, near a fragrant lavender bush.
I don't know if I will continue this blog. There has never been an Opus without a Rosoce; going on without Roz seems wrong. To all of you who have sent along your prayers and well wishes, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I promise to respond to each and every one of you, but for now I will take some time off to grieve and snuggle with Opus.
Roscoe will live on forever in the hearts and minds of those lives he touched....
Cyn
Roscoe - a 2nd letter from Mom Cyndi
We are so happy to hear that Roscoe is improving. Keep up the good work because they appear to be working. Roscoe seems to recovering from his symptoms and is doing much better today. The vet has been referring to his condition on Saturday night as a "collapse". He was weak, dehydrated, unable to walk and had a low body temperature.
Last night he ate for the first time and licked an ice cube. The vet says he might not be drinking because he doesn't feel thirsty with all of his IV fluids. He has gone to bathroom now a total of five times, so his kidney seems to be working for now.
I was a nervous wreck all night as we waited for his morning doctor's appointment. There was a misunderstanding as I understood he would have a Doppler test done. It turned out that the vet had said she would do more blood work, give him another round of IV fluids, and some more IV vitamins and schedule his Doppler appointment.
So where are we at? Roscoe is now eating small bites of soft cat food and is enjoying a cat treat now and again. He is able to walk (yesterday he would fall over after a few steps) He is still leaning to the right and is a bit off balance, but that has improved greatly since last night. The vet performed the same neuro test this morning that had Roscoe failed yesterday; this time he PASSED! The vet had been worried that there could be a brain tumor but is now more hopeful since he is starting to recover some of his balance. The bad news is that there is a tumor on his kidney that is blocking it from functioning and this has made his good kidney work too hard. That is now VERY swollen, but still working.
Tomorrow will have his Doppler test scheduled for 10am (Italy time) and we will know then just what we are dealing with.
I thank you all for your kindness, it means so much to us all us. I knew and feared this day would come, unfortunately it same sooner than expected. Though the boys are old in cat years, I had hoped they would stay healthy for many more years to come. In just a few weeks they will celebrate their 13Th birthday.
Since spring, we have noticed that Roscoe was losing weight. At first we didn't think much about it because he and Opus had been put on diet cat food to help with their "fluffiness". But soon we saw that Roscoe was getting too thin while Opus wasn't losing any. We took him to our vet, but she was on vacation. The vet on call told us that he was a bit thin, but that with the hotter weather it was normal for cats to eat less and lose weight. She told us to keep an eye on him and bring him back if he got any thinner. Otherwise, she told us to return in the fall when the weather was cooler to see how he was doing.
Yesterday when we left the house, Roscoe was his perky, talkative self. He even chased the belt that was hanging off my husband's bathrobe. We were gone ALL DAY, returning home at 7pm. I knew something was wrong when his sweet face wasn't at the door to greet us. We found Roscoe on our second floor terrace where we keep the litter box. He was laying on the ground next to his litter box with his chin on the floor and slobber on the side of his face. He was awake, but wouldn't sit up or walk.
I worried about what kind of medical care the boys and I would get when we moved to Italy. I am relived to say that Roscoe's vet is wonderful. The office was closed for the weekend, with nearest pet emergency room an hour away (and that isn't even a 24 hour one). Our vet left her dinner plans and rushed to the office where she performed many tests.
Roscoe's urine came back fine, but she said his eyes were sluggish, his body temp was too low and he was slow to respond. She also said that he was dehydrated. An ecograph showed that he has what might be a tumor growing on his kidney rendering it useless. The second kidney was unusually large, perhaps because it has been doing all of the work. Oddly though, his blood work came back looking perfect. There were no signs that his kidneys are not functioning enough (for now).
He was given an iv with fluids and also some vitamins. Since there is no 24 staff, Roscoe was sent home with us. I placed his doggy bed (yes, I said doggy it was his Aunt Muffet's bed) with a blanket in the bottom of a laundry basket. I place the laundry basket on our bed and I sat with him all night. Once he drank some water and twice he has gone to the bathroom. I had to carry him there as he is not able to walk. He is not interested in eating at all. But he isn't meowing in pain or crying and he even purrs from time to time when I love on him.We are all very worried about him. Opus is out of his mind. At 5am, he started walking around the bed room meowing. He doesn't want to be held, but he doesn't know what to do. Occasional he goes to Roscoe's bed and licks him. When he isn't in bed with us, he is always near by, never leaving the room. Opus has always been a sensitive cat and he understands well that something is terribly wrong.
Our wonderful vet made a house call this morning, even though it is Sunday morning! She came by to give Roscoe another bottle of IV fluid. She also did a quick neuro check, which showed that there are some problems. Tomorrow he will go back for a Eco/Doppler test which will show more clearly what is going on inside. And then we will know just what we are up against.
I can't even begin to tell you what these cats mean to me. We in the blog community love our pets and, to many of us, they are our children. Opus and Roscoe have gone through a lot with me. For many years it was just the three of us. They slept close to me when I was sick and carried me through a few heart breaks. When I moved to Italy four years ago, I didn't come alone. That has meant the world to me, that we came here together. Opus and Roscoe are a living part of my American life that are with me to Italy.
Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. This is just another reminder of how fragile life is. As soon as you are done reading this, grab your loved one (furry and human), hug them and let them know how much you love them. Thank you all for being our friends- Love, Opus and Roscoe's Mom, Cyndi
Goodbye, Lucy
Moki's sister, Lucy crossed to the bridge last night while lying in her favorite sun spot. passed away tonight around 7:30. I am so thankful for all of your prayers and purrs for him. He died in my arms surrounded by my other babies. I was on the phone with his mom when it started to happen. needless to say she is heartbroken too.It is hard to lose one so young. July 1st he would have turned 2. I feel like I let him down even with all of the love and everything I couldnt get him to want to live, He loved his first mommy so much no one else could take her place. so toinght everyone take your furry children in your arms and tell them you love them like I am doing with mine. Thank you again to all...
