<span style="font-family: "Lucida Handwriting"; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;">I’m a handsome, declawed gentleman of almost 11 years. I’ve just spent a year living in a cage at a shelter, hoping someone would take me home! But no one did – everyone thought I was grumpy. Really, I just hated that cage, and I was confused why my family left me there. I’m actually the sweetest, most affectionate kitty you could ever meet! I do like to talk a lot, though, and I really need to be an only cat. I don’t have any front claws, so I need to live inside all the time. All I need is a lap to lie in for a few minutes, or a hand to brush or pet me. If you feel like it, I might chase a feather on a string! I’m really no trouble at all.

<span style="font-family: "Lucida Handwriting"; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;">If you think you’d like to give me the home of my own that I’ve been looking for all this time, please call the nice lady who helped save my life. (At the shelter, they were going to put me to sleep!) Her name is Amy, and you can call her at 434-770-0350. Tell her Zanzibar sent you. She’ll be so happy to find some good people for me!

I had scheduled myself to stay for two days 2-3rd of Aug at the Sleep-Inn on Grand Ave. It is a pet friendly, clean, well run and impeccable maintained hotel. We, (me, Kirsten and our cats have stayed there 4 of more times per year for years) and have enjoyed their hospitality and helpful services.

On, The 2nd day of working with my local supervisor, Larry Schmidt, we scheduled a split work day, so to work around CAMBREX's on going yearly shutdown refurbishments

.

Now to the TAIL or tale

I leave the SLEEP INN just before 3 pm to meet the crew. As I get into my truck I hear the extreme scream of a very young kitten in dire distress. If anyone has every heard that cry, they will know why my hair stood on end.. I drove over where the screams were coming from. To my horror it was from down a storm-sewer, next to where a vagabond tool-sales semi-truck had been parked the night before and we suspect threw the kitten down the drain.. I called out down the sewer and received the answering panic calls from a very young kitten.

I called my life partner, Kirsten in our hotel room to come down and help me. I also called Scott the hotel day manager for help. Scott called the fire dept which refused to help. I tried to get the city's animal warden to get involve but it was 5 min before quitting time and being part-time choose to not be involved.

Scott and I got the heavy round cover off of the storm sewer and to all three of our's shock, saw a 6 or 7 week old kitten at the bottom of the 8 foot deep sewer pipe. Scott could only find a ladder that was too wide to fit. Kirsten talked down the pipe and dropped cat food down the sewer to keep the kitten below her, hoping to keep it where we could see her. Desperate for help, we called the local newspaper,Charles City Press, who responded with a photographer and I called the city administrators office. I told the city administrator, Tom Brownlow, that I was was from out of town and that the newspaper suggested he as the best resource. I told him, I was having no luck getting help saving this kitten from any city department and could he intervene on our behalf. Thankfully Tom was able to get two public works employees and two police officers to respond. The public-works father and son team tried every trick they knew to get to the kitten but to no avail. The police lieutenant and fellow officer (car 4) removed covers further down the line but there was no possibility of human access. (way to small and deep). The police officer called one of the other officers to bring a catch stick to grab the kitten, but it was too short and frightened the kitten. The car 4 officer went for a live trap, but it was too big for such a confined area. Kirsten ,Scott and I, kept talking and feeding the starved trapped kitten. We had been trying for over 1 1/2 hours.

Thankfully, the Public-works team left a long rope for the police officer's live trap before leaving. but the trap was way too big. I went and grabbed a 5 gal (usa) plastic pail from my truck, Scott tied the rope to it, Kirsten put in cat treats and Scott lowered it down the hole and eased it over on it's side. The Kitten approached but would not go in.

Quandary,

Kirsten said she knew just the trick and ran and got a can of tuna (Neptune's cat magnet) dribbled some into the bottom of the pail and down it went again, over on it side and, more calling and inducing, but thankfully it was "tuna-time" and the kitten approached the pail. Kirsten and Scott called out to me as I held the rope:" her head is in, one foot ,two feet, tummy, back feet, and the tail is out of sight ,PULL PULL," I yanked the pail up and we had the kitten. (see photos). It was skin and bones and not much longer than my hand. Kirsten said she was going to adopt it but we could not take it with us for a week, since we were due in Omaha Nebraska, USA for the next 7 to 10 days. The police officer said he knew someone over at PAWS Humane society in Charles City and graciously took the kitten to PAWS with my business card attached.

Luckily the next day we were able to catch one of the volunteers, who was cleaning up after the many cats & dogs and we were able to photograph Stormy. Kirsten was able to spend some time holding and petting her new family member, before we left town for Omaha..

Poor Pat and Julie, we and others bombarded them with calls, when our contact person, Karen, became ill and did not return calls, trying to find out Stormy's status and arrange a pick-up day and time. Julie graciously called Kirsten and alleviated some of her concerns and tentative arrangements for Stormy's pick-up were set. The lining of her lungs had become inflamed and stiffened up, causing her not to be able to expand her lungs to breathe. This is a very serious condition with a very poor prognosis. Her breathing became very labored today and we couldn't risk her getting critical during the night, so we made the very difficult decision to help her cross the Bridge now. So even if our humans could afford to send her to UC Davis for the surgery, she may not survive it. My mom, our vet and our acupuncturist/TCM practitioner worked out a treatment plan together: chest taps to relieve the fluid build-up and an alternative medicine formula of medicinal mushroom extracts which has been successful in shrinking tumors in studies done in Japan and other countries.

When my mom took Tabbygail to the vet about four weeks ago, the vet didn't think she would live through the weekend, but after the first chest tap, she felt better. She has had two more chest taps since then and has been on the medicine for 1 week. She seem to be having a good day so far. Tabby also is hyperthyroid, and is on meds for that, too.
So that's what is going on with our Tabbygail. She is such a sweet little brown tabby girl and she can use some healing energy, purrs and prayers. Since we don't have a blog, CBers can send their purrs to Tabbygail's Catster page or just send them out to the Universe ... Tabby will get them either way! Thanks so much, KC. Your friend, 'Kaika

Leave comments here since they don't have a blog.

KC and the Giggleman Kittieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11838216166226247001noreply@blogger.com26tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33502899.post-3215806264406448262009-10-17T03:42:00.002-05:002010-01-17T03:59:13.095-05:00Info & Awards

Rainbow Bridge Website is a wonderful site that offers candle lighting on Monday, a prayer chain, a virtual cemetery, flowers, grief counselors, and more for those that have lost their loved one. alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371882818768929698" border="0" />We have just found another lump on Sanuk - this time on her shoulder where injections are given and my first fear was the dreaded sarcoma that sometimes results from injections being given over and over in the same place. The vet did an aspiration of the lump and the cells do not appear to be cancer so we'll wait a month. If the lump is not gone then, Sanuk will have to again go into surgery. At 16 and a 1/2 and having undergone two major surgeries in the last 6 months, I shudder to even think about her having to go through that again. But she seems to feel good - eats well, talks all the time, and she's gained a little weight since the surgery in the spring. Thank you so much for keeping Sanuk in your prayers. ~~ email received 8/19/2009

Sanuk, my 16 year old kitty cat has been through so much this past year (stomatosis, an immune system disorder that causes ulcerated gums and required the removal of all but her canine teeth), a raging infection which, thank goodness antibiotics finally cured. When she went in for a check up on monday, they found a small mass in her lower abdominal/breast area. The earliest they could schedule her for surgery was 7/1 (no other vet in this area could even see her until the first week of july). I just got a call from her vet that they've had a cancellation and can do the surgery this friday (6/19). Please pray for sanuk and her vet/surgeon. Thank you so much. Everyone's comments have been so kind and all the hugs and purrs have made us (well, at least me) feel a little better.

However, Jade is much sicker than I originally thought. Instead of the chronic UTI, Jade has a life-threatening case of infectious feline anemia. If I had not been so blessed to find a vet that knew what her symptoms were, I would have already lost her. He reacted quickly and put her on a strict regimen of medications, but she is still very ill and is not yet out of the woods.

KC, would you please add an update to ask everyone to keep praying for Jade and to tell everyone that has sent purrs, hugs, and prayers our way how much we appreciate all of them? As Ninja doesn't have a blog of her own, KC created a post here where people could leave comments and we could post updates.

Here's the first email: I am very worried about her as her breathing has become somewhat noisy in the past few days. She seems alright otherwise, but I am worried that this may be the start of the cancer growing in her lungs. Please pray for her and me too as my heart is just breaking!! Thank you all so much!

And the second email: I have been in touch with her VET and she wants me to monitor it till after the weekend (its a long weekend here). Someone else suggested that possibly she has a hairball that is high up in the stomach. She has never had a real problem with hairballs, but you never know. As Ninja has to be anesthetised to be examined, the Vet is not too anxious to do this. I am terrified that when the time comes for her to be examined that they will tell me that her lungs are full of cancer and that it is time for her to go. I am so scared of that scenario. She is feeling fine otherwise, but if anything changes, I will take her in right away, even if I have to take her to the Emergency Vet. I won't let her suffer. She is my love and my heart. Thank you so much for caring. ~Brenda & Ninja

Update Email 10/15: Things have not changed too much with Ninja except that she started to refuse food and started licking her lips. I thought she was nauseated for some reason and got a medication from the Vet that is supposed to help her stomach. She had her first dose and ate 1/3 of a can of Fancy Feast which is more than she ate all day yesterday. We are still unsure of the outcome of this as the Vet does not really want to sedate her to examine her. I am still monitoring her. She does not seem to be in any pain and is not depressed. Please keep purring for her. Thank you for your support. ~Brenda & Ninja

Ninja Update 10/17: I am not convinced that it is actually her tummy that is upset. I think now that she has some nasal congestion and has been having a hard time smelling her food. I got her some fish flavored Fancy Feast and she ate 2 cans yesterday!! I was so pleased. She seems a bit brighter and her chest wheezing has settled down. I still think she has an upper respiratory issue going on, but she is not short of breath as she was a few days ago. She actually ran after the laser pointer at top speed last night for a few minutes. She slept well and gave me a love bite just before I left for work this morning. I think all the purring and positive thoughts have helped us so much in this difficult time. I can’t say she is out of the woods (because of the unknown cancer condition), but she is certainly enjoying life again. She isn’t perfect, but she is quite a bit better. Please keep her in your thoughts for continued improvement. Thank you to each and everyone one of you!! ~Brenda & Ninja

Ninja Update 10/22 - I have appointment with the VET tomorrow at 4:00 CST. We plan to do an xray to see why she is vomiting after eating and having a noisy purr. She was not interested in eating this morning (Wednesday) and I gave her a PepcidAC to calm her tummy. She slept well with me all night and I held her close. I am hoping for the best - that she has something that can be treated, but I am preparing for the worst - cancer. If the problem is cancer, I feel I must let her go. It pains me so much, I can't describe it. She is my companion, my confidante and my heart, always there, always non-judgemental. She has slept in my bed every night that I have slept at home for over 12 years, even now, when she is not feeling too well. Please pray hard for my little girl. If its cancer, I can't let her whither away before she goes to the bridge just because I want her here with me. I will have to make the hardest decision I have ever had to make tomorrow, so please pray for me to have the strength to do what is the best for Ninja despite my desire not to let her go. I am working today, but I will spend the day at home with Ninja tomorrow. Bless you all for your continued support and understanding. All the love you created is still there. All the memories are still there. You live on-in the hearts of everyone you have touched and nurtured while you were here". -Morris S. Schwartz: Tuesdays With Morrie

Just when I think that I can't cry any more, an entire new flood of tears come. I am swallowed by a grief so deep, that I feel my heart is caving in. Last night our beloved Roscoe went over the rainbow bridge. He took a sudden turn for the worse late last night. At 4am we rushed him to the closest 24 hour clinic located near Bologna. The vet worked with Roscoe for hours, doing everything in his power to save our sweet baby. Roscoe's system seemed to be shutting down. Three times he quit breathing on his own and three times he wasintubated and assisted with his breathing. Three times he came back to us. The vet pushed onward telling us that Roscoe's heart was very strong that he was putting a good fight. He was convinced that if we could just get Roscoe stabilized, that there would be hope for treatment.

The fourth time sweet Roscoe stopped breathing, I wanted to scream "STOP IT!" as the vet intubated him for the fourth time. I didn't want to be the one to give up, but I didn't want Roscoe to go through anymore. Somehow that sweet little cat saved me having to do it. Before I could utter the words his little heart gave up and death came to carry him gently over the bridge.

I am devastated. Please don't one more person tell me that "it's only a cat". For those of you who can say that, I pity you for you have never really experience the unconditional love and friendship of an animal.

We loving placed Roscoe in a beautiful wicker basket. He was wrapped in his favorite blanket and surround by photos of his family. We also placed in a few of his favorite toys, including a catnip sack his Grandma had given him and a red mouse from his friendAsta; red was Roscoe's color. We secured the basket and placed a photo of Rosoce on the top, along with his name and a poem. He sleeps now under the beautiful plum tree in yard, near a fragrant lavender bush.

I don't know if I will continue this blog. There has never been an Opus without a Rosoce; going on without Roz seems wrong. To all of you who have sent along your prayers and well wishes, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I promise to respond to each and every one of you, but for now I will take some time off to grieve and snuggle with Opus.

Roscoe will live on forever in the hearts and minds of those lives he touched....

Cyn

KC and the Giggleman Kittieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11838216166226247001noreply@blogger.com10
